Springtime garden party in Elzenhof

On Saturday March 30th, everyone was invited to a cosy springtime party in the neighbourhood garden of Elzenhof. This year the garden party focused on the official laying of the first stone and on welcoming the new season. The children of school 'De Wimpel' were also proud to present their "chicken" exhibition and the neighbourhood oven was tested and ready for use!

Read-a-thon 'I Am Here Now'

The newly founded Asmara-Addis Literary festival (in Exile) and publoic library Sans Souci organized a thrilling Read-a-thon ‘I AM HERE NOW’, a fundraising event made up of students from the Creative Writing Academy for Refugees & Asylum Seekers, as well as international and Belgian poets and authors. The event showed the role of literature in raising awareness about the issues of migration and seeking refuge, displayed the magic of reading at libraries and highlighted the linguistic and literary diversity of Ixelles, Belgium and Europe.

La petite place qui sépare les rues Maries-Henriette et Kerckx méritait depuis longtemps un peu de couleurs... Dans le cadre du contrat de quartier durable Maelbeek et avec le soutien de plusieurs services communaux, une jolie fresque murale de la main de l'artiste ORKEZ fut unaugurée officiellement hier en fin de journée avec un petit verre de l'amitié pour fêter l'événement. Bravo aux initiateurs du comité "Un Village à XL" qui ont aidé à embellir leur quartier !

Sans Souci Living Stories, a huge success
Sans Souci street and neighbourhood at Ixelles
La 1ère édition des sans Souci Living Stories , le nouvel événement littéraire organisé par la bibliothèque néerlandophone, a attiré pas mal de public dans le quartier Sans Souci à Ixelles… Les habitants du quartier accueillirent des écrivains, des lecteurs de contes et d’autres animateurs dans leur salon pour y créer des moments intimes et des rencontres enrichissantes. Avec comme clou de la journée une fanfare rocambolesque dans les rues avoisinantes et un afterwork très réussi au centre Den Teirling !

Eind oktober streek het cultureel laboratorium Piazza dell’Arte neer in KA Etterbeek om er drie dagen lang met de leerlingen van de 2de en 3de graad Humane Wetenschappen te werken rond een thematisch kunstatelier. Dit jaar was het onderwerp “Tijd”. De leerlingen gingen er in hun kunstatelier mee aan de slag, samen met een team van professionele kunstenaars. Het verbluffend resultaat kon je ontdekken in een boeiend en multimediaal toonmoment in het gemeenschapscentrum Elzenhof.

Avec l’oeuvre d’art “L’éléphant qui barrit”, l’artiste Jantien Mook veut porter un hommage à la jungle. Une sculpture géante d’un éléphant africain parcourt le monde et apparaît dans les villes pour faire entendre ses ‘hurlements’… L’éléphant a démarré son voyage à Amsterdam, a fait une halte à Rotterdam et vient de ressurgir depuis le mercredi 12 juillet sur la place Flagey à Ixelles ! De Kring-Elsene est une association socioculturelle néerlandophone qui fut créée dans les années '60 aux abords du cloître des Pères du Saint Sacrement sur la chaussée de Wavre. Beaucoup d'habitants flamands d'Ixelles y vinrent à l'église le dimanche et c'est de là qu'est née l'association. Le samedi 13 mai, De Kring-Elsene a soufflé ses 50 bougies au centre Elzenhof. Si vous êtes intéressés de devenir membre du Kring, vous êtes les bienvenus, chaque dimanche de 11h à 14h dans le bar du Elzenhof.

Le premier mercredi après les vacances de Pâques, les équipes de "Brede School" (Ecole Large) à Ixelles et à Etterbeek organisaient conjointement la Journée en plein air pour les enfants de 4 à 12 ans. C'était une belle journée de printemps ensoleillée! Malgré le froid, les enfants pouvaient se défouler en jouant et exerçant des sports. Kennismaking onder de vrijwilligers

Op de Vrijwilligersdag in GC Elzenhof kwamen zo’n 30-tal vertrouwde gezichten opdagen. Om 15u werd de dag ingezet met een bezoekje + proeverij aan de brouwers in de kelderverdieping. Nadien volgde een korte samenzangsessie met de bekende Vlaamse klassieker « Vrolijke vrolijke vrienden », dit onder gitaarbegeleiding van Elzenhofs bard Eugène Lachute… Vervolgens kon iedereen deelnemen aan een workshop naar keuze : bloembakken verzorgen voor de groene vingers of een lekker gerecht klaarmaken voor het gevarieerd buffet… 's Avonds werd er aangeschoven aan een lange 'auberge espagnole' taf...

Nel, een zot geweld - De lezing

Schrijver Peter Theunynck en illustrator Lies Van Gasse maakten samen de prachtige beeldroman "Nel, een zot geweld". De 'graphic novel' gaat over Nel, de vrouw en muze van kunstenaar Rik Wouters. Het gelijknamige en welbekende beeldhouwwerk van deze kunstenaar staat opgesteld in het Museum van Elsene. Tijdens een lezing op zaterdag 18 februari vertelde Peter Theunynck over hun beeldroman, terwijl je live de tekenkunsten van Lies Van Gasse kon gade slaan. Iedere deelnemer kreeg ook een vrijkaart om het beeldhouwwerk van Rik Wouters in het Museum van Elsene te gaan bezoeken.

Gedurende een hele dag werd een bewegingsparcours voor kleuters opgesteld in de grote zaal van Malibran. Zo konden de kleuters van de twee Nederlandstalige scholen (De Wimpel en Lutgardis) telkens een uur lang naar hartenlust experimenteren met allerlei sport- en spelmateriaal. Er werd volop gefietst, gebouwd, geturnd en natuurlijk gespeeld. De kleuters haalden hun hartje op en de leerkrachten van de wijkscholen met een kleine speelplaats of turnzaal waren in de wolken over zov...

Het Vlaams-Afrikaans Huis Kuumba heeft sinds enkele maanden een nieuwe stek, in een voormalig Congolees reisbureau in hartje Matonge. Om hun officiële (her)opening te vieren werd ook de tentoonstelling “Schaamteloos Schoon” daar hernomen. En zoals voor elk zichzelf resepecterend Afrikaans feest hoorde daar ook muziek, percussie, een glaasje, een knipbeurt en een live-optreden bij (van de Congolese rumba band Color Rumba). De expo loopt nog tot 24 oktober, van dinsdag tot zaterdag, telkens van 14u. tot 20u.

Met de slogan 'Is jouw bibliotheek klaar voor de toekomst?' lanceerden studenten Binnenhuisinrichting van de Universiteit Antwerpen een oproep naar Vlaamse openbare bibliotheken. Meer dan 20 bibliotheken stelden zich kandidaat, uiteindelijk werden er twee geselecteerd, waaronder Bibliotheek Sans Souci te Elsene. Het bib-interieur herdenken in functie van de digitale uitdagingen, het creëren van een sociale en open werk- en ontmoetingsplaats waar men kan experimenten met nieuwe digitale technologie om creativiteit bij kinderen aan te moedigen, het integreren van een makerspace en het verbetere...

Op het Flageyplein vond op vrijdag 19 augustus voor het eerst het Urban Arts Solidarity Festival plaats. Op het plein stonden tal van standjes opgesteld waar je meer informatie kreeg over gevoelige thema's zoals seksueel overdraagbare aandoeningen, verslavingen, ecologie en handicaps. Dat ging gisteren gepaard met allerlei ludieke activiteiten, zoals streetdanceshows en -initiaties, een boksinitiatie, een klimmuur, een circus, en een verenigingsdorp. Maar je kon ook ervaren hoe het bijvoorbeeld is om op krukken door het leven te moeten, of hoe vanzelfsprekend we ons gezichtsvermogen vinden.

Verleden week woensdag, op 13 april, organiseerden Brede Scholen Elsene en Etterbeek de Buitenspeeldag in het Leopoldpark, gelegen tussen beide gemeenten. Die dag hebben heel wat kinderen zich kunnen uitleven op allerlei vlak. Zo waren er verschillende soorten sport te doen (ping-pong, panna soccer, skaten, …), er kon geknutseld worden met ijzerdraad in het kunstatelier, er waren leuke new games en natuurspelletjes, er werden spelinterventies gedaan doorheen het park, je kon er speerwerpen en reuzenbellen blazen, enzoverder. Als tussendoortje waren er wafels op een stokje die ook erg bleken...

We plukten wilde kruiden, sprokkelden hout, maakten een tentenkamp en bakten kruidenbrood op een (veilige) vuurkorf. Dit allemaal in hartje Elsene, in de korte Malibranstraat. Een heus avontuur!

To celebrate the end of this first CoderDojo Sans Souci year in the Ixelles library we organized a special CoderJo afternoon on Saturday June 20th in the Micro Factory. We had to open a round wooden box where Pieter from Micro Factory had hidden something. Using the laser cutter and 3D printer, we created, after a lot of measuring, drawing, printing and cutting, our own spanners and where then able to open the treasure. We discovered a chip allowing us to print real LEGO-blocs which we had designed a few months ago with the SketchUp computer program. Mission accomplished.

Parc du Viaduc and playing streets
On Wednesday the 1st of April, kids in Ixelles could participate in all kinds of outdoor activities. 'Brede School Elsene' and 'Brede School Etterbeek' organised a whole series of games, sports and workshops in the 'Parc du Viaduc' and in the streets of Etterbeek . One could play soccer, build carts, make seed bombs, climb up trees, breakdance, design an original marble track, and so much more... Despite the cold April weather, a lot of children came out to play, which made it a great success!

La carnaval du monde fut cette année encore un grand succès! Malgré le froid - mais heureusement sans pluie ou neige - plus de 150 enfants se rassemblaient sur la place Flagey pour ensuite rejoindre un grand cortège qui serpentait à travers des rues du quartier Malibran. Sur les rythmes des tambours, les enfants riaient et dansaient... et parfois ils grelottaient aussi! On Tuesday December 16th, the first and second year of BS De Wimpel had their own exhibition in the Ixelles Museum. During 9 weeks, the children worked around the theme ìPaul Delvauxî. Parents, brothers and sisters were invited to come and admire the creations and works of art of the pupils. The result was really beautiful and it was a successful closure of the term.

All 22 local community centers closed their doors on May 8. Together with the VGC-administration they called upon action against bad policy of VGC concerning the workers issues. As much as 600 people, organizations, directors, volunteers,… gathered at five to twelve, a symbolic hour, at the Place St-Catherine in the heart of Brussels. A cosy Living Room Music Festival

10 artists/bands playing in the living rooms of an enthusiastic bunch of inhabitants of Ixelles, an equipe counting 26 cheerful volunteers, 7 professionals of Muziekpublique asbl and a most welcoming artistic workplace: the recipe for a very succesful edition of the festival "Living Room Music" on sunday the 4th of may in the quartier Sceptre at Ixelles. Well… Let’s just say that the toddlers department ‘Kroonlaan’ of primary school De Wimpel worked out - for weeks on end – a fine artproject together with artists of partnerorganisation MUS-E. The project was part of Brede School at Ixelles. During the whole period the Kroonlaan toddlers could experiment in any shape or form really, ranging from fine arts, multimedia, dance and music. Fun with theater at the Children s Museum
During the period of a whole school year children of the first level of the primary school Lutgardis could participate in after school theater workshops at the Children's Museum nearby in Ixelles. This setting speaks to the imagination and so it was quite easy to teach the children about theatrical techniques, body development, performing characters and along the way brushing up on their Dutch language skills.On Tuesday April 29, the parents teamed up with their kids for a final presentation and a small reception afterwards. On April 25. an overview of recent national productions was screened and a few days later, on April 30. The audience had a hard time NOT laughing with a ‘Funny’ special. Flanders Action Day "Buitenspeeldag" in Ixelles!

Just before the Easter holidays, on Wednesday April 2nd., Ixelles and Etterbeek welcomed 'Buitenspeeldag'.On three different locations full of green children could enjoy an action packed afternoon with workshops revolving around playing and moving outside. There was breakdancing, works of art, games to be played, prehistoric wall drawings, throwing spears, and much more. During a cooking workshop the kids could emerge on culinary adventures and tasting experiences.Blessed with great weather the event was mighty crowded. Yep, 'Buitenspeeldag' sure was a success!

Woensdagnamiddag eind februari.Kinderen stromen verkleed toe op het Flageyplein, vergezeld van oma, mama of papa. Het belooft elke donderdagavond een bont en gevarieerd gezelschap te worden want de bedoeling is dat ook mensen uit de andere ateliers van de Zinnode Elsene-Molenbeek hun eigen kostuums hier komen maken! De tweejaarlijkse Zinneke parade gaat dit jaar uit op zaterdag 11 mei in de Brusselse straten... We staan reeds te trappelen!

Half november startte in heel Vlaanderen en Brussel de jaarlijkse Voorleesweek! Bij deze gelegenheid nodigde Bibliotheek Sans Souci op zaterdag 16 november 2013 vanaf 10u illustrator Mattias De Leeuw uit, die onder live muzikale begeleiding het verhaal vertelt van 'Karel Eend', het personage uit zijn gelijknamige prentenboek. De kinderen waren onder de indruk, hun ouders en/of genoten natuurlijk mee! Tussendoor kon je je prentenboek door Mattias laten signeren.

Conversation with a Stranger is an art event which was organised last October by curator Luce Goutelle and the pluridisciplinary art centre nadine. It took place at Hotel Le Berger and Plateau. This experimental project revolved around the work of some thirty participants – artists and amateurs – who got in touch with the public through performances, artistic installations and lectures. After the official premiere took place in Geneva, Le Petit Théâtre Mercelis at Ixelles was proud to present the show Lisanga. This tragicomic one man show by the Congolese theatre maker Cheik Fita focuses on the story of a labourer who gets dismissed in Kinshasa and was a collaboration with Kuumba, a local association for intercultural meeting.

A continuous lounge garden with parasols, garden chairs, cocktails, concerts, water fun, kids playground, picnic, petanque, a game of pool, boxing lessons for the young and dj sessions… Three local radio stations from Brussels guaranteed a party atmosphere: FM Brussel, Radio Campus and Radio Panik. Cycling for Libraries

Hundred and twenty librarians on a bike! The colleagues at Library Sans Souci could not believe what they saw when this group of international activists arrived on the 25th of June. The cycling library workers came from all around the world and united with one main aim: to deliver a memorandum to the European Parliament, which they carried all the way from Amsterdam to Brussels. In between these two capitals, they visited a number of Dutch and Belgian libraries, amongst which the one at Ixelles.

This new multidisciplinary festival which took place from the 5th until the 9th of June, experimented with the borders in between both neighbourhoods, and made the inhabitants feel closer to each other.
